BCM551 - Control room fun with an Elite
(7:25) Level 8 ('Two Betrayals') on Normal. Instalment four on the control room focuses on having fun with an Elite. I show a little set-up work at the start, mainly to point him out. In this new set-up I'm using Normal (wanted the Elite to be more robust than on Easy), and I've got a plasma rifle and rocket launcher.

Commentary
00:02 (Setting up) This set-up footage highlights the Elite you end up having fun with, and also indicates the route I took to get the rocket launcher, namely skirting down the left. And unlike last time (see BCM548), this time I remembered to top up my plasmas! Of course, the reason I wanted the launcher was that I anticipated making good use of it with the Elite.
Incidentally, the first clip is actually a patched-in reshoot I felt obliged to make. At the time I created my set-up, I was mistakenly thinking that the Elite you end up with is the first one, but in fact it's the second (see my article for details). Due to that misunderstanding, my footage hadn't even featured the second Elite at the start. That was no good from a tutorial standpoint, so I patched in a more appropriate sequence.
One minor shortcoming of my set-up work: I let the Banshee take a plasma ball just after boarding. That was needless damage. Really I should've made the area safe so I could get away cleanly. For the later fun with the Elite, really you want your Banshee to be in perfect or near-perfect condition, because for some activities it's going to come under quite a bit of fire.
01:32 (Shark play) At the start here, I get him raging with a Banshee blast fired at close range after making him dive to one side (it seemed easier to target him that way). Then once he's on the circular platform I do a bit of Shark play. However, the barriers stop him actually diving off (unless he were to dive off near the control panel where there is no barrier).
02:27 (Herding) Now I demonstrate another activity, herding him along the path and eventually getting him to dive off at the control panel. My technique could've been better in places, but it's a bit of a delicate business and at least I got him there.
03:19 (Panel play) Notice the long-range Banshee blast at the start, to get him raging. Pretty easy to do, and it saves time compared to delivering a blast close up. This became my standard method in the course of making the movie, so I thought it was worth featuring here. As for the panel play, I manage to shoot him, whack him, and tag him on the nose.
04:05 (Clumsy Elite, inner edge attack) The rest of the movie involves exploiting the Elite's actions near the control panel. For starters here are three clips where I've gone onto the inner edge, and he clumsily goes over the edge when pursuing me. I attack in various ways.
04:43 (Mid-air blasts) A couple of mid-air Banshee blasts now, after he goes over the edge again. Seems I got a bit close on the second one though!
05:25 (Elite on the barrier) When he's moving around near the control panel, he often ends up mounting the nearby barrier. These nine clips illustrate some things you can do with that. For some of these clips I used a modification (or two) of my set-up in which the Elite was already up on the barrier. That saved me time in producing entertaining clips. Didn't have to get him onto the barrier each time.
Regarding the two needler clips, I picked up the needler back in the passage. Luckily there was one still left from the Grunts.
As for the various clips in which I blast the Elite off still alive, the blast had to be distant from him (almost out of damage range), else he'd die. So I had some careful aiming to do there.
For the finale at 7:00 I pull off a novel freefall splatter which I thought was quite amusing.
Closing remarks For a long time I was trying hard to keep the movie under seven minutes, which was tough because there was so much to try and cram in. On the last day however, I relented and allowed myself an extra half minute or so. For one thing, that enabled me to show a bit more of the set-up play, so it didn't seem quite so abbreviated. For another, I was able to include a second needler clip, namely the one at 6:42 in which I get killed. I'd recorded a whole bunch of amusing needler clips, so it had been a bit painful to only have room for one. The extension also let me include some ascent footage for the finale, which helped build anticipation I think.
