BCM515 - Tree in a Warthog, using a nice tree pair

(6:53) Level 5 ('Assault on the Control Room') on Heroic. Soon after releasing BCM514 I embarked on further exploration of the 'tree in a Warthog' phenomenon and found a good spot to do it in, featuring two suitable trees not far apart and in bright open ground. Couple of Marines came along for the ride too!

Released October 2nd 2024, gameplay recorded September 30th - October 2nd 2024.

Commentary

00:02 (Success with the outer tree) Here's the tree pair I spent some time on, typically driving at one and then the other in turn. That pattern is represented in this clip, though to keep the movie duration down, I've only got two attempts here. Initially you see a failure with the 'central' tree, but then a success with the outer one. In some stress-testing it holds well, including in reverse gear, but as you can see, two melee whacks cause it to spring free down the very slight slope.

01:09 (Success with the central tree, but easily meleed free) Just another example of easily getting a hog free with melee. Only one whack needed this time. Similar to an example in the previous movie.

01:23 (Pass-through) A nice example of pass-through with the outer tree.

01:34 (Central tree again, and repeated plays) After getting a success with the central tree, I get a convenient delayed tunnel checkpoint so I can repeatedly try stuff. The hog seems well stuck to begin with, but eventually comes free. A subsequent clip shows a much quicker freeing (that clip starts right after the checkpoint by the way), plus another view of 'tyre burn' in the snow. Also featured in the sequence of clips with this checkpoint: camerawork fun, anchored rotation, freeing with a Banshee nudge, and freeing with grenades (okay, that last topic was also there for fun).

06:15 (Coming next) I haven't put together the next movie yet, but this brief final clip indicates the theme I'll be covering. Namely, pushing the hog into a tree, instead of driving it there. Thought of that a few days ago, and I already have quite a bit of footage.

Closing remarks In my closing remarks for the last movie, I spoke of probing further "in due course", and I was thinking of some time weeks or months into the future, because I already had various other stuff on the menu. But the movie seemed to spark some interest among viewers, and I was interested myself of course, so I decided to just go ahead without delay. So here we are.

For this movie I was using a set-up derived from the previous one. Without triggering the battle, I ditched Stacker (who was about to go inactive), picked up two of the original three Marines, and subsequently got a delayed tunnel checkpoint in the vicinity of the nice tree pair I'd found, ready for some play.

Although much of the movie featured similar dynamics to what the previous movie showed, I didn't really mind that, and particularly wanted to give some good coverage in bright (non-shadowed) ground this time. Among the benefits of the brightness, I got much better examples of camerawork showing passengers. A few new things were introduced though, aside from the obvious one of indicating these trees as being a nice pair to use. One was the use of a checkpoint for doing stress-testing or whatever. Another was 'tyre burn' (albeit just a peripheral aspect). And another of course, just introduced at the end, was the fact that you can also get the phenomenon by pushing the hog.
