BCM549 - Control room mini-Halo inspection and fun
(5:33) Level 8 ('Two Betrayals') on Easy. In this second instalment on the control room I focus on the mini-Halo which orbits around. A spectacular feature with which you can have some good fun, quite apart from taking a closer look at it. I'm using the same set-up as in the last movie.

00:02 (Tracking) A good activity this! I don't recall doing any of this before, i.e. many years ago when I first brought a Banshee to the room. It's something I thought of some days ago, and I realised I needed to feature it in a movie. In regard to the caption "Takes a bit of practice", it took me a bit of practice at least, to do it reasonably well.
01:17 (Hovering for close views) Likewise, hovering to get close and dramatic views is something I've only come up on revisiting the control room topic. There are twelve clips here, giving a variety of relatively good views. And again, this involved some effort in terms of the flying.
02:56 (Big sign) A spot of fun here, but that does look like an angry dinosaur at bottom right, doesn't it? The head of a T-rex or something, with his mouth wide open. Admittedly I'm probably looking at the sign the wrong way up, but never mind; I still say it's a dino!
03:22 (Ring motion) At some point I had the idea of showing the ring speeded up, so you can get a better idea of its motion. Doing it in a Banshee turned out to be best, and I tried various positions where I could keep it stationary. The results were pleasing and you see here a sequence of six clips, starting with a relatively long one (25 secs) covering almost three and a half minutes of real time (almost a full 4-minute ring animation cycle). The individual clips have their audio muted (didn't sound good), but there's overlaid audio of a stationary manned Banshee to provide atmosphere.
04:39 (Another ring) This cute little polygonal ring got my attention during the making of the movie, so I decided to briefly feature it as a bonus. Not sure what it represents though.
05:02 (Comedy ending) I wasn't sure how I'd be ending the movie, but this coffee shops joke came to mind, and I thought that would do nicely. Had to put in quite a bit of work to get a high-quality clip though. I wanted not only to track the ring nicely, but also, most importantly, show the two signs well. That last part was the more difficult bit, involving some precision hovering.
Closing remarks Okay, I think that turned out quite well as a second instalment. Certainly gave me some pretty footage anyway. More recreation coming up in instalment three!
