Tackling the final vehicles on foot
Posted December 27th 2007
The final enemy vehicles of the level buzz around a big hill past a break in the road. There are multiple Wraiths and Choppers, all painfully lethal. However, it's quite possible to tackle them on foot, and it's actually pretty enjoyable. Here's my normal method, which is based on the use of a plasma pistol and fuel rod gun.
After coming on though a tunnel from rally point alpha, you rejoin the highway and meet a few Brutes. After killing them, get the fuel rod gun lying on the ground or use it to boost your ammo if you've already got one. Head along the broken road and drop down underneath where you'll have immediate cover from any Choppers whizzing around. If one comes close you can blast it with the fuel rod gun. Marines will probably follow in one or more hogs and soon provide a distraction, though it's not really needed.
Continue practically straight ahead to get to the base of the hill where there are a few weapons including a fuel rod gun and full plasma pistol. To start tackling Wraiths, get ready with plasma pistol and fuel rod gun. Clamber up the hill. Just near the top, peek over a rock and you're likely to see a Wraith close by; but if there isn't one, you can soon attract one up by firing into the air. Try to take it by surprise with an overcharge shot. Once it's immobilized, pile in several shots from the fuel rod gun to destroy it. It may fire at you, but as long as your reactions are good you can evade plasma blasts by quickly stepping back and down. The rocks give you great cover. There are more Wraiths and they can be dealt with in a similar way: immobilize then blast, from good cover.
Feel free to go back down the hill intermittently to help Marines tackle Choppers. Lurk around the bridge supports for good cover and pounce with the fuel rod gun, or tag Choppers with grenades as they pass.
There's another fuel rod gun on the other side of the hill if you need it, but if you go down to get it you'll be in a relatively vulnerable position for a while. Be ready to take on any Chopper that comes your way. There's a trip mine that can be useful.
